As a follow up to our last post which detailed our experience at NYUAD Idea Lab’s Angel Hack Hackathon on September 4-5th in Abu Dhabi, we want to share some additional thoughts on what we see as the new archetype of the modern office space.
Over the past decade or so, the emblematic office space has undergone an accelerating evolution that encompasses various perspectives of utility, aesthetic and workplace culture. Silicon Valley may be the starkest example of how far the dial has moved from the utilitarian floor plans of the late 20th century through today.
Wikipedia defines an office as “A room or other area where administrative work is done…In modern terms an office usually refers to the location where white-collar workers are employed.”
However, we believe that the modern office represents much more than this, particularly in how employees and businesses respectively relate to their work space and what it represents to them. For example, a thoughtfully designed, beautiful yet functional office can enhance a business on many levels driving talent acquisition and retention, facilitating a more competitive, more successful, happier and ultimately more productive workforce.
Similarly, employees may be prone to see office utility and design as a preliminary representation of corporate culture and fit. More importantly, a thoughtfully designed office has the ability to motivate, inspire and retain employees. This is where there is a shared interest in the workspace between stakeholders and why businesses should view office design as a capital investment rather than a sunk cost. Simply put, happier, healthier, more productive employees who stick around are good for a business’s top and bottom line.
So this brings us to the part where we get to talk about ourselves, GlassQUBE Coworking. Our outlook of the new office space archetype and belief in the underlying philosophy is illustrated in what we are bringing to Abu Dhabi in 2016. The GlassQUBE Coworking building will provide large, leading edge designed communal areas on every single floor dedicated to facilitating collaboration, networking, snacking or simply providing Members with a chance to stretch to their legs and get a change of scenery. In fact, communal areas will represent 25% of our total floor area. To clarify, we are giving up 25% of our rentable floor area or 25,000 square feet of our building so that our Members can become more inspired, more creative, healthier and more successful.
Accompanying our state of the art communal spaces will be the provision of conference rooms, breakout rooms, quiet zones, game rooms, access to a full floor private gym on the mezzanine level, and our signature GlassQUBE rooftop terrace with 360 degree views of Abu Dhabi city.
And note that our physical space is only a part of the GlassQUBE value proposition. GlassQUBE Coworking will cultivate and actively manage a collaborative “open source” ecosystem in partnership with our Members, providing them with access to our professional networks, educational resources and the support services they require to grow and be successful.
Clearly, GlassQUBE Coworking will not be a typical business center. As a coworking entrepreneurial business center, our strategic objective is to attract, support and retain Members through providing Abu Dhabi and the UAE with a best in class business center solution that will allow businesses grow and succeed. But let’s be clear, this is mutualism rather than altruism. Successful Members translate to a stable or growing Member community which means that we are effectively making a capital investment that serves our respective mutual success. And there’s the rub.
